Description

The confrontation of black and white portraits and Vodoun altars photographed in color, taken in Benin, takes us fully into this fascinating world.

The Vodounons are the great initiates of the Vodoun religion. Each of them is connected to one or more Vodoun of which he is the officiant and the guardian. Each Vodoun, even if it keeps the same name, can take on different appearances or forms.

Vodoun, originating from Dahomey (now called Benin), dates back to the dawn of time and is part of the highest initiation of times past. It is defined by adherence to a certain idea of divinity, to a certain understanding of the concept of God. Vodoun theology has a double face. On the one hand, an exoteric aspect, consisting of beliefs and legends delivered to the masses, who, spiritually undeveloped, cannot access the truth. On the other hand, an esoteric aspect, intended for the initiates, who have reached the maturity necessary for the realization of god in themselves. This vision is, however, no less than a deceptive appearance, because the true adepts bequeath their science only through symbolic language, and make only a few allusions to it, sometimes very laconic, in such a way that if it falls by chance into the hands of a layman, it will remain incomprehensible, illogical, inoperative and, consequently, he will derive no benefit from it.

The work of Jean-Dominique Burton presented in this book is above all a series of meetings and exchanges, it shows with humility what is hidden behind this delicately lifted "veil of Isis", it opens the way to mysteries and will give many enthusiasts the desire to continue the quest.
