Frankétienne's first novel, written in 1972, describes the vertigo of wandering without purpose. Vatel, a sort of knight errant, is the one who dares to ask existential questions. He must confront his negative double, Mac Abre, a being of violence and cynicism. It is also a long work on the French language that marks the invention of what will later become the "spiralist" movement.
