Description

One summer afternoon, the writer meets a young man on Saint-Denis Street, Mongo, who has just arrived in Montreal. He reminds him of another young man who arrived in the same city in 1976. The same dismay and the same determination. Mongo asks: how can he fit into this new society? They enter a café and the conversation begins like in a Diderot novel. It is this light and serious tone that the reader recognizes from the beginning of a Laferrière book.

Laferrière tells young Mongo about forty years of life. A long love letter to Quebec.

"We must remain vigilant. Exile is the greatest driving school. We should send all children to do an internship at the school of exile. To date, only the damned of the earth seem to benefit from this master class. In this obligation to observe the other attentively, we sometimes discover ourselves. By analyzing each of their gestures in this way, it takes a while before we see that we were in front of a mirror.
— I risk getting lost in this adventure.
—That's the risk of the journey, Mongo."

Dany Laferrière, born April 13, 1953 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, received the Prix Médicis in 2009 for The Enigma of the Return. He was elected to the Académie française in 2013. He published with Mémoire d'encrier The 80s in my old Ford (2005), Everything is moving around me (2011), Journal of a writer in pajamas (2013) and Everything they won't tell you, Mongo (2015).
