Description
Toussaint Louverture "By overthrowing me, they have only cut down in Saint-Domingue the trunk of the tree of freedom for the Blacks; it will grow back by the roots, because they are as deep as they are numerous." Born on the island of Saint-Domingue, Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a freed slave, made his fortune growing coffee. Leading the insurrection against French rule when the Revolution of 1789 broke out, he was appointed general-in-chief and then took the title of "governor general for life" after having decreed the freedom of the colony. Arrested on the orders of Bonaparte, he was deported to Fort de Joux, in the Jura massif, where he died on April 7, 1803. Less than a year later, the independence of Saint-Domingue was proclaimed. Taking the Creole name of Haiti - meaning mountainous country - the island then became the first black republic in the history of the world.
