Description
Two teenage girls confronted with violence and poverty try to survive in Brazil in the late 1970s. Forced to leave the orphanage, they must find their absent mother who leads a chaotic life. They are left to their own devices, terrified and starving in a sugar town where a rain of ash falls relentlessly on the inhabitants. They set off on a long journey to find a father they never knew. Easy prey for the predators who populate the roads, they are swept up in risky situations despite themselves. The truth will eventually come to light for Smiley who will decide to take her life in hand. In this novel - a declaration of wounded love - each clings to the other like a lifeline. The rage to live is matched only by a moving dignity. Both a social novel and a coming-of-age novel, "Saisons des feux" addresses very current issues, at the intersection of ecology and the different oppressions suffered by girls and women, racialized people and people in precarious situations.
