Description
In Brazil, from the 16th century onwards, black slaves freed themselves and founded maroon communities, called quilombos. These free and self-organized republics repelled the numerous attacks of the colonists and became, for several centuries, the symbol of resistance to slave regimes. Far from being isolated, the quilombos maintained strong links with the slaves who remained prisoners, but also with peasants, tavern keepers and peddlers. They are very diverse: in terms of size – that of Palmares had thousands of members –, mode of organization, ethnic origin – there are also Indians, mestizos, Europeans who have broken away from their banishment… –, cultural practices and economic system. However, they all constitute autonomous territories with a community lifestyle. This book, written by one of the best Brazilian specialists, traces the history of the quilombos. By describing the conditions of their birth and multiplication in many regions of Brazil, the life of their inhabitants and their struggles, it allows us to understand their resistance to time and the persistence of their descendants in fighting for their rights, even today.
