Description
The Hegelian paradigm of recognition, admirably criticized by Frantz Fanon in the seminal work to which this book pays homage, is today evoked, in its liberal form, in the debates surrounding the self-determination of colonized peoples, notably the indigenous peoples of North America. A political scientist and activist, a member of the Dene Nation of Northwestern Canada, the author here takes up Fanon's critique and demonstrates how this recognition only consolidates colonial domination. This work of engaged political theory calls for rebuilding and redeploying the cultural practices of colonized peoples on the basis of self-recognition, the only path to real decolonization. A Marxist thinker, Coulthard knows that Marxism cannot be applied as such to the struggle of Indigenous peoples, but he underlines its potential contribution and here signs a true treatise on decolonial and anti-capitalist combat. Glen Sean Coulthard is a professor in the First Nations Studies program and the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (Canada).
