Description
The long-awaited debut book from a biracial community leader and civic activist. Stephen Dorsey explores his lived experience of systemic racism in North America and the best paths to combat it.
My racial duality gives me a unique perspective on both the Black and White Canadian experiences... What became most apparent to me, and most universal, was the pressing need to build bridges of understanding between Black and White Canadian populations. We need to inform and educate so that in time, we can finally make real change.
Stephen himself lives in a world of duality. A bilingual and biracial man, he moves between Canada’s French and English communities and between the worlds of whites and blacks. In this deeply personal and insightful debut, he offers readers an intimate and unfiltered look at his experiences of anti-Black racism around the world, including in Canada, the United States, and Europe. It focuses on his youth in 1970s Montreal, growing up as a Black child in a white family dominated by a racist stepfather. Stephen then takes us along on this unique journey that led to his personal awakening, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Part autobiography, part social analysis, Black and White is an intimate dig into the deep structures of systemic racism in North America, from our healthcare and education systems to policing and the law. Stephen also offers a deep dive into the unique intersectional discrimination faced by minorities in his home province of Quebec. With an inclusive and accessible approach that aims to connect with and educate the community, Stephen delves into the history of racial discrimination in Canada. He does not shy away from drawing parallels with our American neighbour to offer us a new perspective on our nation’s mythological narrative. Stephen puts white privilege into context and now speaks to us about “white advantage,” with concrete paths for lasting societal change.
Black and White gently calls readers to account to awaken the ally who lies dormant within us.
