Description
Nègès Mawon presents Alaso .
Founded in 2015, Nègès Mawon is a feminist protest organization that fights for the emancipation of women and their liberation from all forms of violence and oppression. A century of struggles, mobilizations, confrontations, evolution, antagonisms, victories, but also defeats. This century is that of Haitian feminism, the roots of which can be found in 1915 with many women active in the Patriotic Union against the American occupation, then in 1934 with the formalization of the first Haitian feminist organization, the Women's League for Social Action.
It becomes increasingly difficult to produce feminist thought when the basic needs of the population are not being met, especially in the Haitian context where the space for reflection is so limited with a state that does not fulfill its minimal obligations. The margins are both a site “imposed by oppressive structures,” but also “a site of radical possibility, a space of resistance.” These are the words of the intellectual, activist and figure of black feminism, bell hooks.
This project aims to propose new modes of distribution of feminist thought and voices.
Far from the clichés about third-world feminism which would be confined to emergency assistance, Alaso is a platform by Haitian feminist women in Haiti and the diaspora, to disseminate our ideas, our positions, our vision and our aspirations.
This magazine, available in two bilingual editions (one in Haitian Creole and French, the other in Haitian Creole and English), is published twice a year: on November 18 (the date of commemoration of the Battle of Vertière – November 18, 1803 – which put an end to Napoleon Bonaparte's attempt to restore French sovereignty over the island) and on April 3, on the occasion of the Haitian feminist movement day.
This is to affirm the active participation of Haitian women in the liberation struggle and in the creation of the first black Republic.
