Description
This issue of Liberté is a special issue, produced in the wake of our issue entirely devoted to indigenous issues (First Peoples: Mapping a Liberation) in the fall of 2018, edited by Pierrot Ross-Tremblay, Nawel Hamidi, and Darryl Leroux. This issue was a great success and allowed us to create lasting working relationships and friendships that have deeply marked the spirit and ways of doing things of the journal. This experience was in fact so rich that we wanted to repeat it, this time turning our gaze towards the heart of the continent, the Caribbean, the belly of the Americas. In this way, we want to move, once again, the margin towards the center, by reflecting on Americanness from the Caribbean heritage and trajectories; taking into account the dark legacy of colonization and transatlantic slavery. The editorial direction of this issue was entrusted to our collaborator Lorrie Jean-Louis, who has sat on the editorial board of Liberté since 2019. Normally, only the texts presented in the dossier relate to the theme of the issue. But here, we have decided to tie all the articles to Caribbean issues, from the essays and interviews presented in the Rencontres section to the works considered in the critical notebook. We obviously do not claim to present an exhaustive portrait of the Caribbean in this issue. It is, at best, a certain look at the radiant multiplicities of the Caribbean. And above all, we hope it is the beginning of a dialogue, the start of a never-ending reflection that will continue through our future publications. In this issue, a literary stroll with Rodney St-Eloi, an unpublished translation of a text by Rinaldo Walcott on the revolutionary legacy of reggae, Nadia Chonville on women who write in Martinique, the poetry of Miryam Charles, Frantz Voltaire on the history of the Caribbean, a meeting with Yohayna Hernandez behind the scenes at the Museum of the Revolution in Havana, and more… The issue will be unveiled during the last days of February, Black History Month, and presented as an opportunity to extend the reflection beyond this designated commemorative month.
