Description
In French Guiana, they are called Aluku, Ndyuka, Paramaka and Saramaka. Maroons, their history is rooted in the heroic struggles of their ancestors who, reduced to slavery on the American continent, snatched their freedom from the colonists. Located in the north of South America, sharing borders with Brazil and Suriname, most of this French department is occupied by the Amazon rainforest. More than 37,000 Maroons currently live along the rivers. Richard Price and Sally Price, specialists in Maroon societies, paint a portrait of these peoples and serve as our passionate guides for the discovery of their history, their customs, their cultures and their arts.
Written in clear and precise language, this work is enriched with numerous photographs and documents. Some fifteen art folios at the end of the work give us an insight into the richness of the Maroons' artistic creation.
