Description
Written more than ten years before the moving Gouverneurs de la rosée , La montagne ensorcelée lays the foundations for the masterpiece to come, since it narrates the life of a village perched on the side of a mountain in the grip of drought and poverty. In addition to these daily ills of the village, there is a series of curious deaths that raise questions, spread panic and awaken superstitions among the inhabitants, who then all turn their gaze towards the same person. The gallery of characters painted by Jacques Roumain in this short story and in his early prose La proie et l'ombre , compose a profoundly human picture of Haiti, from which poetic flashes emerge that intertwine Creole and French.
