Description
Many people still think that Blacks are the most recent immigrants. This is to misunderstand the history of Canada and Quebec since Blacks have always been part of the Quebec experience. Even if they were relegated to the background for a long time, they contributed to the growth of the province and still participate in it today.
The history of black people in Quebec is not only social. It is also legal and political. Indeed, the ambient racism in Quebec and Canada – a term used here as a synonym for “discrimination” – is echoed in the legislation of the province and the country as well as in society as a whole.
History also teaches us a lot about the slavery of Blacks and the fact that some were also considered, to use the common expression, as "free Negroes". We discover how difficult the situation of Blacks present in the province or in the country could have been, and even more so in times of crisis. The Black population has nevertheless changed gradually since the mid-1950s and, as such, the book allows us to better understand the evolution of Black communities in Quebec up to the present day. You will see how the history of Blacks in Quebec reveals the contribution of these women and men to Quebec society, past and present.
