“It was a closed wound, she was sleeping with her fists closed. I said to myself, I’m going to open it, I’m going to talk about it and I’m going to get this wound anchored inside me out.” (Marguerite, survivor of an Indian residential school) In Canada, between the 1880s and 1990s, more than 150,000 children were students in residential schools designated by the federal government as Indian residential schools. In Quebec, it is estimated that this involved approximately 13,000 children. This book is dedicated to the particular experience of Quebec, to these 13,000 children, to the residential schools they attended, to the adults they became, to the different actors who participated in their schooling and to the legacy that this period leaves them, and leaves us. This book is not intended to denounce, but to participate in the vast national project, launched by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to make known the history and the aftermath of residential schools. He wants to encourage reflection based on research work and open up fields of investigation to improve knowledge, so that the wound can heal, in a future of healthy relations with indigenous peoples.
