Description

Born in Algeria in 1894 and died in the suburbs of Paris in 1953, the Kabyle anarchist Mohamed Saïl was a tireless anti-militarist, anti-colonialist and anti-capitalist activist throughout his life. A rebel and deserter during the First World War, he unhesitatingly joined the Durruti column during the Spanish Civil War to fight the fascists and take part in the revolution. Harassed by the police, arrested and imprisoned several times, he never stopped contributing to various North African and French newspapers and ensuring their distribution, organizing struggle committees and participating in many meetings and demonstrations.

This anthology brings together some thirty of his texts written between 1924 and 1951, which specifically target French colonial oppression in Algeria as well as the murderous and often hypocritical racism of the Republican administration, while calling on his Algerian and French comrades to be wary of false solutions and to join the ranks of the anarchists. Mohamed Saïl's anger resonates particularly with that of today's popular uprisings.
