The essays collected in this book were written between the signing of the Oslo Accords (1993) and 1999, the year of its publication. They constitute at once a chronicle of events, an indictment and a plea. An indictment against the arrogance and cynicism of Israeli leaders, against the bias of the United States, against the corruption and collaborationist policy of Arafat and the Palestinian Authority. A plea for the abandonment on both sides of an outdated nationalism, for the recognition of historical responsibilities, for the coexistence of two equal and reconciled peoples on the territory of historic Palestine.
"The choice is clear, it is either apartheid or justice and citizenship for all... The fight we are waging is a fight for democracy and equal rights, for a secular state in which all members are equal citizens, and not a false fight inspired by a distant mythological past, whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim."
Almost two decades have passed since the book was first published and, while the idea of a common state is now discussed all over the world, these lines have unfortunately not aged a bit.
