Description

On September 12, 1977, Steve Biko was assassinated by the South African police. This collection of articles written between 1969 and 1977, some clandestinely, bears witness to the living conditions and resistance movements in South Africa during apartheid, while offering a detailed analysis of the mechanisms of oppression put in place by the white minority regime.

Throughout these texts, we see not only the outlines of an emancipatory philosophy that is added to those of authors such as Frantz Fanon, Aimé Césaire or Amilcar Cabral, but also a history of South Africa distinct from that which will be imposed by the new South African government of the ANC.

Steve Biko had never been translated into French before. However, his thinking allowed the creation of the Black Consciousness Movement, which became one of the most important political forces opposing apartheid during the 1980s. This book is not just a tribute to the history of this movement and the struggles that Steve Biko led, it is also a first gateway to another, plural history of apartheid.
