Description

Preface by Dr. Price-Mars;
Introduction and musical transcription by Professor W. Jaegerhuber;
Illustrations by Georges Remponeau

The book reflects the prodigious Haitian musical memory. A vast repertoire of songs, drawing from different places (mountains, plains and sea), René Victor opens here a new chapter in Haitian ethnography by collecting "these debris of old civilizations that still litter (...) the Haitian land". Precious work, underlines the preface writer Jean Price-Mars. This book is an exemplary model of artistic collaboration. The drawings of Georges Remponeau, the musical transcription of Professor Werner A. Jægerhuber have given this book a singular cachet, which makes these Songs a model of illumination for researchers, ethnologists and musicologists.

" Songs of the Mountain, the Plain and the Sea , written in the late 1930s, was never published. The author, René Victor, felt that the book was not ready and that something was missing: an anecdote, a study, a song. While he was obsessed with this text, he published others: The Voices of Our Streets, Choucoune or the Destiny of a Beautiful Poem. He was also working on another work that remained in the form of investigations, note-taking: On the Trail of Port-au-Princien ."
