Description
Meet Viola Desmond, entrepreneur and true pioneer for racial equality in Canada.
On a rainy day in November 1946, Viola, visiting Glasgow, Nova Scotia, decided to go to the movies. She sat in the unofficially whites-only section, but the usher asked her to move. Viola refused, knowing it was because of her skin color. The police took her away by force. Viola was imprisoned, tried, and convicted. However, with the help of her supporters, she continued to fight for social justice.
Although she ultimately lost her case in the Supreme Court, she was a trailblazer for early civil rights activists. Thanks to the hard work of her sister Wanda who fought to have her legacy recognized, Viola's portrait will be featured on the new Canadian $10 bill.
