Description
Contrary to what one might imagine, the poetic landscape of women in the Arab world is rich. Already, in the history of classical Arab culture, several women have made their voices heard through poetry.
In the 20th century, in connection with the liberation and modernization movement of Arab societies, women reappeared. The most famous are the Iraqi Nazik al-Malaïka, the Palestinian Fadwa Touqan, the Syrians Colette Khoury or Ghada Al Saman… But in recent years we can see a real explosion of Arab female poetry, undoubtedly favored by the Internet and social networks which mean that it is no longer essential to have published books to disseminate one's poems. Even if, in some countries, access to publication remains difficult. Sometimes some poetesses choose to change their name to spare their family and loved ones, because poetry is an intimate matter and revealing the intimate is often frowned upon, perceived as an act of immodesty.
The reader will sometimes be surprised by the respect for the Arabic poetic tradition and sometimes by the modernity of the texts, but what unites these women is their freedom of expression, a freedom won in a difficult world where no one is a "prophetess in her own country"...
Hoping that through these words of women, the reader (or the reader) will get a somewhat new idea, not only of Arab women, but also of men who, even if they are invisible, are present in these pages. Modernity is like the wave of a great ocean that has gradually won over the whole world… The movements that have shaken French and Western poetry have also touched the shores of Arabic poetry and the modernity of Arabic poetry, today, not only has nothing to envy that of other countries but can in return influence them. If there is a globalization of societies, there is also, through a great diversity which is a richness, a globalization of poetry.
