The Balcony of GodA young white South African couple, Donovan and Mélania Bertens, on their honeymoon in Mauritius, are forced by a violent cyclone to stay in Mayotte. Donovan and his wife are stunned, then shocked to discover the social misery, the proliferation of shanty towns, the hordes of children abandoned in the streets and the state of disrepair that reigns in this French territory endowed with exceptional nature and a sumptuous lagoon. An admirer of Nelson Mandela, the young Donovan sees in this neglected island an Africa in pain and a cause to defend. Back in Cape Town, he convinces his wife to go and live in Mayotte. There they find a providential guide, an erudite Mahoran who tells them the legend of his island emerging from a jewel considered to be the most divine of promontories. Very quickly, the newcomers find themselves confined at home: insecurity, social movements, the indifference of Paris and the migratory pressure on this highly flammable territory raise the threat of clashes between communities. Donovan commits himself and gets involved. Too much?...
